What Is Joy?

Recovery opens the door to experiencing peace and joy again, but for many, the concept of joy feels unfamiliar. Someone recently asked me, “What is joy? I’m not even sure I know.”

I love Emily Nagoski’s definition of joy: Joy is loving what’s true.

To feel joy, you need to connect to yourself and know what’s true about your life. Joy requires safety—both physical and emotional—and an understanding of who you are and what you love.

Start by exploring what brings you happiness. What do you truly enjoy? What makes you feel alive and connected? Next, focus on creating safety in your life.

Build a community where you feel supported and secure. When you can love what’s true about yourself and your life, joy naturally follows.

At Connected Recovery™, we guide individuals through this journey, helping them rediscover peace, safety, and the joy of loving what’s true.
